Healthy Eating

Healthy eating is important for a healthy lifestyle. Below are some tips about healthy eating.

Eat foods from the five food groups each day and aim to include 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables.

  1. Bread, cereals, rice, pasta and noodles (include wholegrain varieties).
  2. Vegetables (include 5 serves a day).
  3. Fruit (include 2 serves a day).
  4. Milk, yogurt, cheese (choose low fat dairy products).
  5. Meat, fish, poultry, eggs and nuts.

More information on these healthy foods, see the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating.

Eat these healthy foods instead of “extra foods”.

‘Extra foods’ are things like cakes, biscuits, lollies, and chips, which are not included in the five food groups. To ensure a healthy lifestyle only eat ‘extra foods’ in small amounts, and only occasionally or not at all if you are trying to lose weight.

Stop eating when you are comfortably full.

Drink water instead of “energy dense” drinks.

Drinking water instead of sports drinks, flavoured mineral water, fruit drinks, soft drinks and alcohol is an easy way to decrease the amount of kilojoules you consume.

Make sure you eat a healthy breakfast.
